Session 3 “Process Theorizing in Tourism Management Research”

Overview

Process is defined as “a sequence of individual and collective events, actions, and activities unfolding over time in context” (Pettigrew, 1997, p. 338). In management studies, scholarly efforts aimed at understanding why and how particular organizational phenomena emerge, change (e.g., evolve, decline, or transform), and conclude are referred to as process research (Langley et al., 2013; Van de Ven & Huber, 1990). The focus on process is not new (see Mhor, 1982). However, to better elucidate phenomena that cannot be fully explained by theories focusing on relationships between variables (e.g., increasing X and Y leads to an increase in Z), growing attention has been paid in recent years to theory advancement that emphasizes processes (e.g., doing A followed by B results in C), an approach known as process theorizing (Cloutier & Langley, 2020; Demir & Lychnell, 2015; Garud et al., 2020). Responding to this call, this workshop demonstrates the academic and practical relevance of process theorizing, reflects on the theoretical contributions made by process research in the context of tourism management, and discusses future avenues for its application and development in this field
